Earthsea

A world of islands, wizards, and the names of things

Fantasy
CuratedUrsula K. Le Guin · A Wizard of Earthsea

About This World

Earthsea is an ocean with islands scattered like stones: some large enough for kingdoms, some barely enough for a fisherman. Its magic runs on true names: to know a name is to hold power over the thing. Ged, the greatest archmage, spent his life hunting a shadow he loosed as a student. It is a quiet world where the deepest magic is the understanding of mortality.

Notable Locations

Roke Island

The center of learning and magic in Earthsea, home of the School of Wizardry and the nine Masters who govern it.

Gont

A steep, mountainous island in the northeast, known for producing mages of exceptional power and Ged himself.

Havnor

The largest island and seat of the High King, where the sword of Erreth-Akbe is kept and the greatest stories end.

Atuan

A dry, lawless island in the far east, home to the Tombs of Atuan, where old and nameless powers are worshipped in darkness.

The Dry Land

The realm of the dead, a grey, silent place where the dead walk in meaningless repetition and the living do not belong.

The Open Sea

The western waters beyond the known islands: uncharted and the edge of the world.
